The evidence in support of regular dietary intakes of long-chain omega 3 fatty acids to promote health, in particular heart health has been developing strongly for the past 30 years. Dietary recommendations are based on the need for heart disease patients to consume more oil-rich fish to increase their intake of omega 3, as numerous studies have shown an associated reduction in the risk of death from a heart attack.

During pregnancy, women have increased needs for these essential fatty acids as they are required to develop the brain of the foetus and this process continues into the first year of the infants’ life.

Throughout life omega 3s are necessary to maintain healthy bodily functions - required for cell membranes and physiological functions.
